Yielding to pressure from the Opposition parties, the State government on Wednesday, took the decision to discharge Dr S Malini from the post of assistant director of Forensic Psychology division of Forensic Science Laboratories in Bangalore. She was on probation.

Home Minister V S Acharya, announced this decision in the Legislature Council, after members of the Congress and the JD(S) staged a dharna demanding her dismissal.

JD(S) leader M C Nanaiah, raising the issue, said that Malini had furnished forged documents to get the appointment. She had been working in the institute on a contract basis since 1999. She was appointed to the post on a regular basis in 2007.

She gave false date of birth to claim eligibility to the post and furnished fake documents as proof of her expertise in the field. While her date of birth is 12-05-1960. She lowered her age by four years to become eligible for the post. The documents, she furnished, had been attested by her husband Dr B K Muralidhar, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, UVCE, Nanaiah said.

He, further, said the DG&IGP had sent a report recommending the Principal Secretary (Home Department) to discharge her from the service as she furnished wrong information to get recruited to the post. The DG&IGP recommended action against Dr Mohan, Director of FSL, Mudduveeraiah, Chief Administrative Officer (Office of DG&IGP), who were in the recruitment committee. Other two in the committee were the then DG&IGP K R Srinivasan, who is no more and Subhash Bharani, who was ADG (Crime & Tech Services). He took VRS in April 2008.

Nanaiah said the CBI, investigating into the Sister Abhaya case of Kerala, had also alleged that Malini manipulated the CDs related to tests conducted on the accused. A deputy director of CBI had subjected Malini for an interrogation in this connection on February 6 this year. In addition, Nanaiah said, Malini leaked the contents of the brain mapping and lie detector tests, to media well before submitting the same to the investigating agency. “A huge amount of money is involved in such affairs,” he said.

Acharya said the department had served a notice asking her to reply to the allegations levelled against her.

Action would be taken in accordance with the reply, he added. Dissatisfied with the reply, the Opposition members staged a dharna, compelling chairman Veeranna Mathikatti to adjourn the House for sometime.

When the House reassembled Acharya said the officer would be sent on leave. However, the Opposition did not budge from its stand. Eventually, Acharya declared that she would be relieved from the service. Later the Congress and the JD(S) withdrew the protest. Leader of the Opposition V S Ugrappa and Nanaiah demanded that those responsible for her getting the post should be suspended.

Abhishek Bachchan’s marathon seven-city promotional tour for the movie Delhi-6 kept the security staff busy in managing his fans and led to some moviegoers missing their films but the actor exuded confidence in getting his name listed in the record books.
As the actor rushed from one city to another in his attempt to get the feedback of audiences in different cinema halls, his fans were there all the time. “It is really exciting to get first hand response about your movie. The cinema halls were running packed wherever I went,” the junior Bachchan told reporters.
His target cities are Ghaziabad, Noida, Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Chandigarh and Mumbai.
The actor reached a Noida cinema 10 minutes before schedule only to see a over 500-strong crowd gathering around the hall, literally threatening to disrupt the event. Though Bachchan had initially planned to interact with the audience, he had to rush out within 10 minutes.
Many of the moviegoers were also caught in the crowd and missed their show as the tight security made their entry difficult.

Mangalore: Four days after the police registered an FIR against their party leader and union minister for Women and Child development Renuka Chowdhury, District Youth Congress Committee (DYCC) on Monday, said it was contemplating to file a defamation suit against City Corporation Mayor and a few others for allegedly defaming her.

Talking to reporters here, DYCC president Bondala Jagannatha Shetty alleged that the mayor Ganesh Hosabettu (BJP) and others have made certain defamatory remarks against Chowdhury in Delhi and Hyderabad in the wake of the minister lashing out at those who attacked women in a pub and on the law and order situation here.

The mayor himself faced several cases, Shetty alleged and charged that after BJP came to power, the district had been witnessing attacks on women.

Hosabettu and a few others filed a case against Chowdhury contending that certain remarks made her that “Mangalore has been Talibanised” amounted insulting people of the district and the court directed the police to register an FIR against
the minister.

The Mangalore Rural police registered the FIR on February 20.

bangalore: Editor-in-chief of ‘Karavali Ale’ B V Seetaram has demanded the resignation of Home Minister V S Acharya and dismissal of some top cops. Seetharam was chased before he was handcuffed and arrested on January 19 in a filmi style. The High Court had called his arrest and detention illegal and directed the home ministry to pay Rs 10,000 to him as compensation.

Seetharam today demanded that the state government should dismiss Dakshin Kannada SP, Western Range IGP, Home Secretary and Mysore jail superintendent. “We have named them in the habeas corpus plea and the High Court has ordered them to pay Rs 10,000 to me for keeping me in illegal custody from January 19 to February 3. The government should now place them under suspension pending dismissal proceedings,” he said in a press meet.

Seetharam held V S Acharya responsible for the many attacks and controversies in Mangalore. “He is directly responsible for the anarchic situation prevailing in Mangalore now. His omission and commissions are proving too costly for the people of the state. He should relinquish the minister’s post owning moral responsibility. If not, the Chief Minister should drop him from the cabinet,” he said.

‘Acharya lied’

“Acharya said in the legislative assembly that I was served three summons before the final warrant. A week ago he told reporters in Udupi that I was served seven summons and nine warrants before being arrested. He should first clarify which of the two stories is true. The truth is that no summons were ever served to me,” he said.

He also said that Acharya had lied that he (Seetharam) insisted on being handcuffed. “I actually resisted when the police tried to handcuff me. But they said they had orders from higher ups to handcuff me. Otherwise, they said that they would lose their jobs,” he said.

Seetharam said he fears for his life and printing assets. “In the couple of years, I was arrested twice and attacks by anti-social elements took place. I fear the government may trouble me again, foisting on us concocted cases. In any case, the government should take clearance from the State Human Rights Commission in case it wants to arrest me or any of our office persons,” he said.

He has urged the centre to provide security to him, his family and press stating state government’s failure. “We also demand setting up of a central commission of inquiry to look into the entire gamut of the cases covering attacks on our press, curbs on our circulation network during the past three months and my arrest coupled with illegal detention. The report should be expected in three months’ times,” he said.

Fifteen-year-old Ashwini committed suicide because she felt humiliated.

But the men who caught and thrashed her and her Muslim friend haven’t been arrested yet.

In the Mangalore pub attack earlier, right wing Hindu activists thrashed women publically. The men from Sri Ram Sene were bailed out within a week.

So when Mangalore’s reputation is under attack what do the authorities do?

The Mayor presses charges against a Union Minister for calling the developments Talibanisation.

On Wednesday, a court allowed Mayor Ganesh Hosebettu to file an FIR against Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury.

“I am amazed and amused . They must actually go against those who attacked. In fact papers also called it Talibanisation,” she says.

But what’s even more shocking is the candid admission to NDTV by Mangalore’s top cop.

Sateesh Kumar, SP of Mangalore, says: “We have managed to find out who the accused are, we will be shortly arresting them.”

“If the police take action nobody will dare do it again. We have the police, the home minister only to protect us. But their statements shock and scare me,” says a local.

The Managlore Mayor has acted against a Central Minister to prove a point. But many question, why are those who tarnished Mangalore’s image in the first place free?

The controversies after the Mangalore pub attack just refuse to die down.
Adding to the list of related incidents, Minister for Women and Child Development Renuka Choudhary has now been dragged to court by the Mayor of Mangalore Ganesh Hosabettu.
He has filed a criminal case against her for allegedly glorifying what he calls isolated incidents and generalising the city as Talibanised. The case comes up for a hearing on Tuesday.
However, the minister has said that she this is an attempt to politicise the issue.
“I haven’t received any notice and they are saying all this to divert from the main issue. They drove a 16-year-old girl to suicide and now they are talking about someone else,” Renuka Chowdhury said.

Mangalore case: Why no action yet?

A 15-year-old girl was pushed to kill herself after alleged saffron brigade activists harassed and humiliated her in Mangalore. Her crime: being in the company of Muslim boys.
After four days, the police has admitted to NDTV that they are treading carefully because they fear a communal flare-up.
The Mangalore police have admitted that they are scared to question let alone arrest the men who led 15-year-old Ashwini to commit suicide last Wednesday.
Ashwini’s fault was that she and her friends Mahadevi, Salim and Rafeeq were caught and thrashed by men alleged to be Bajrang Dal activists.
Unable to bear the humiliation of being assaulted, Ashwini committed suicide.
Five days on, the police has not arrested any of attackers.
“If you bring an accused to the station, even to question for one hour, people will come to know. Then immediately there will be tension or a communal flare up,” said Sateesh Kumar, Mangalore SP.
Praveen Hegde, Pranesh, Satish, Ashok, Jairaj are alleged attackers as mentioned by Rafeeq, victim and eye witness in the case. They dragged Ashwini and her friend Salim to the Mulky police station, 40 km from Mangalore.
Some are very worried about the police’s open reluctance to take action in communally sensitive cases.
“With elections round the corner I suspect these incidents will go up. It is an indication that peace cannot be restored just yet. After the BJP government took over here, incidents like these have risen,” said Dr. Sara Aboobacker, writer.
“Today the police force is handpicked by the politicians for various reasons. These people think it is their duty to be politically correct, whether it is moral policing or communal case, we see police hesitating,” said Ved Marwah, former commissioner of police.
“The government is to be blamed. The police is to be blamed. The entire administration is to be blamed. If this is the way they are going to act in next few months before the elections girls whether from minority or majority would not feel safe,” said Flavia Agnes, women’s rights activist.
Sources in the Karnataka police told NDTV that the department is on the tenterhooks fearing the next two months ahead of general elections may see such violent incidents aimed to trigger disharmony, mainly the south coastal belt, where there is a strong presence of the saffron brigade and a sizeable population of the minority communities.
